Although it earned the sector two years after the initial first licenses were issued and the winners began operations, Globacom signified it was going to decide and fuel competition in the sector when it pioneered per seconds billing in Nigeria. That singular action changed the telecoms game entirely; Nigerians have continued to see more positive products and services being dished out by the company on a regular basis.

Globacom has since flagged off its operations in Benin Republic(where the same call rates are charged to and from Nigeria) and is almost set to begi operations in Ghana, as part of Africa-wide drive.

While many others are hooked onto the SAT-3, which is still more of a monopoly held by the first national operator, NITEL, Globacom has since set about building its own undersea cable, Glo1, which is said to be already nearing landing in Nigeria and therefore will soon be completed.

The IT & telecoms Digest, has applauded Globacom’s sponsorship of the event as platinium sponsor and praised the company for its foresight, aggressive market penetration and quality of service despite daunting challenges in the sub region. This gesture from this key telecoms player in West Africa is expected to further strengthen the regions telecommunications growth curve, which the entire world sees as possibly the last stronghold for growth on the continent of Africa.
